This will be Sweden’s third trip to the IFAF Senior World Championship having previously competed in the inaugural event in 1999 held in Italy and also competed in 2007 in Japan. In 1999, Sweden made an impressive debut claiming the Bronze Medal defeating Italy 38-13 with a stellar performance from Lars Gustafsson who still holds the record for total rushing yards in a game with 232 yards. He also holds the record for total rushing yards in a tournament with 447 yards.. In 2007, Sweden returned to the action, again the Swedes reached the Bronze-Medal Game, but fell to Germany in a hard fought 7-0 battle.
The Swedish American Football Federation (Svenska Amerikansk Fotbollsförbundet) is the governing national federation for the sport which was founded in 1984 with 7,500 active members organized in 76 different clubs. Sweden is represented internationally by four different national teams: a men’s senior team, a ladies senior team, a junior team (under 19s) and a youth team. The national teams consist of the best available players, in each group, selected from all clubs in the nation.
